ReplyDeleteIf this society was more gentle and loving and caring (especially to children growing up in poverty etc) there would be very little actual crimes..

We are a nation of hypocrites, arrogantly preaching human rights to the world even as we still practice rendition and run our own stalag down at Guantanamo.
ReplyDeleteI bet we'd all be amazed at how many fewer incarcerated we'd have in this country if we would take care of the mentally ill in mental institutions and clinics, rather than city and county jails and state prisons. Same goes for legalizing marijuana and treating drug addiction as the public health problem it is, instead of making it a crime. We could probably save a bundle by going that route because it would be cheaper than warehousing addicts in prisons for long stretches.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the private prisons industry would fight that tooth and nail, along with some in law enforcement who've built their careers on the current failed approach.
To add to what S.W. said, treating someone as a criminal for possession of drugs, which is a personal decision, albeit not the wisest, is not just immoral, but counter-productive. Rarely does someone come out of prison better off than when they went in.

Did you now in Japanese prisons the prisoners are checked on every 5 minutes to make sure they don't lay down? They have to sleep sitting up.
ReplyDeleteJapanese are very strict when it comes to laws. For example, possessing even the smallest amount of marijuana can get you up to seven years in prison. As such, I can definitely see how the police would be abusive due to the position of power that they possess. After all, if law is taken seriously, police officers will be respected, so less people would bring charges against them if they abuse others.
ReplyDeleteHey right-wingers like Haley Barbour love releasing murderers, just ask Mike Huckabee who pardoned a convicted murderer who went on to murder 4 cops in Washington. Huckabee released 1033 prisoners during his time.
ReplyDeletePutting people in prison for possessing small amounts of narcotics is absolutely idiotic. I would decriminalize marijuana and for the other stuff offer treatment and/or community service. Incarceration, like Mr. Myste has adroitly stated, just makes people worse (not to mention, society poorer).
